Cultural Assessment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
By Dementia Training Australia
The Cultural assessment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is a unique document designed to record important cultural and life information, and build rapport between health professionals and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person with dementia and their family. Ideally the cultural assessment is a ‘living document’ where the assessing health professional, family and person with dementia can document important family and community relationships, connections to ‘country’, and the life history of the person with dementia in an Aboriginal historical context. Reflections from this document can be used to help maintain important cultural connections, plan care and inform environmental considerations for the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person in aged care.
